Meet-up: Developing Organic & Ethical Skincare Products As A Business, 25 May 2010 [PAST EVENT]
What are the realities of researching and formulating new skincare products for the market? How does anyone launch a range and make sales? At the May She's Ingenious! meeting, guest speaker Amaka Olateju will share the story of Wuchi by Maks, her range of award-winning organic and ethical products that sells through wholesalers, online retailers and her own website. When Amaka Olateju found that none of the prescribed creams worked for her daughter's eczema, she turned to the knowledge handed down by her Nigerian grandmother who used herbs and natural products to produce healing remedies. She spent more than 4 years creating and testing her own creams and lotions. Those that worked soon became popular among friends and family. Amaka soon saw the potential for her remedies as a luxury range of natural skincare products, both organic and ethically sourced. She signed up to a business law and marketing degree and booked herself onto skincare manufacturing courses in her holidays. WuChi by Maks was born. At May's She's Ingenious! meeting, Amaka will share her story of the highs and lows that took her from experimenting in her own kitchen by night and selling at Spitalfields market by day, to winning "Online Business of the Year" in the 2009 Precious Awards and A Special Recognition Award at BFIIN 2009. Find out what Amaka has learned about formulating, sourcing, branding, packaging, manufacturing and selling from her journey with WuChi by Maks. There's great networking too. Booking essential. Establishing a business is like growing a seed...it will take care and constant attention but if you put in the hard work, the Universe makes sure that every step you take draws you closer to where you want to be."
