How To Work Out The Distribution-Pricing Dilemma For Your New Product
Renee Cleary interviewed by Cally Robson (part 1)

Unfortunately, there are no magic pricing formulas or ways to calculate the best route to market for a new product. But with a cool head, it's possible to take a calculated guess that will pay off.

Legal attorney-turned-product designer, Renee Cleary, has a quiet confidence about her innovative bluetooth accessories. But it isn't her legal background that is giving her the edge.

Renee has clearly enjoyed investigating her distribution options and holding back to make informed decisions about mark-ups, margins and pricing for her products.

In Part 1 of the interview, Renee Cleary talks about:
For selling via her own website, the BlueClip carry Renee Cleary's Nectar branding
For selling via her own website, the BlueClip carry Renee Cleary's Nectar branding

  • Her BlueNeck and BlueClip accessories for bluetooth headsets.
  • Researching her options to build a picture for different market segments about mark-ups, pricing and distribution.
  • Keeping her distribution options open in the early stages - if distribution with a major distributor fails, she likes to know she can fall back on making direct sales from her own website.
  • Pricing and mark-ups vary for different markets and different distributors - there are no hard and fast pricing rules
  • In the US, for electrical products you have to work with a distributor.
  • She works backwards from the most likely price point for each market segment to calculate the distributor margin and her margin. From this she is able to work out what she would have to make the product for to make it financially viable.
