What To Do When You Find Yourself In Uncharted Territory
Renee Cleary interviewed by Cally Robson (Part 2)

The moment you decide to make your new idea real, you are setting out on a journey. Inevitably, there will be unfamiliar areas in product development, prototyping, legal agreements and marketing.

When Renee Cleary gave up her well-paid job as a company attorney, she knew she was taking a risk in developing her BlueClip and BlueNeck ranges of bluetooth accessories.

Her legal background helped with some areas of development, like generally working with contracts and agreements. But she stresses there will always be specialist knowledge you have to go in search of, particularly when it comes to individual markets, which vary widely.

What does Renee do when she enters uncharted territory?

In Part 2 of the interview, Renee talks about:
The BlueNeck is a practical accessory and is also designed as jewelley

  • Her legal background only gives her a GENERAL understanding of how licensing and distribution contracts work. She has still has to find out the detail about how different markets and distributors work.
  • You don't have to be a legal specialist to get the terms of a contract right - with your own product, you'll know the right questions to ask. Just don't be afraid to ask.
  • She works by taking baby steps in lots of different directions, so she doesn't miss something big she should know about. For example, requirements for environmental packaging are changing in the US (2009). Finding out such things NOW helps her make the right decisions for the future.
  • She always puts more focus on the areas she DOESN'T know enough about. For example, she knew nothing about branding when she started out. So she went to the library and boughts books to fill the gap in her knowledge.
  • She often organizes information into a matrix (table) to spot where the gaps are and what she needs to focus on.

Note: Part 1 of this interview focuses on pricing and distribution (includes Renee's YouTube demo of her product)
