The BFIIN Awards dinner celebrates women at every stage of product development


Winners of the 2009 British Female Inventors and Innovators Network Awards

Held in Cardiff 29-30 June, the BFIIN 2009 Showcase, Conference and Awards Dinner celebrated the success of more than 60 women and support organizations in bringing innovative ideas and inventions to market.

Entrants displayed their new products and inventions and were interviewed by two judges each from an independent panel of 13. Award presentations were made at a gala dinner attended by 140 people.

Category winners:  

  •  The Inventor - Denise Anstey, Slik Stick, a foldable walking stick that lights the way
  •  The Innovator - Mah Hussain-Gambles, Saaf Pure Skincare, ethical and organic skincare products
  •  The Exceptional Creative Category - Jane Rafter, Slinks, designer sandals with interchangeable uppers
  •  Inventors/Innovators in Industry - Hanna Sykulska-Lawrence, Mars Microscopy substrates, methods for producing high-resolution images of the surface of Mars
  •  Higher Education & Learning Institutions - Paula Sofowora, Discover Nigeria, first title in a series about Africa
  •  Women in Product Development - Ermila smith, Winter in Venice, range of beauty products
  •  Health & Beauty Award (not awarded)
  •  Capacity Building Initiatives or Projects - Sacoma
  •  Best Business Idea - Sian Brooks, Skiweb, simple device for carrying snow skis and poles
  •  Most Innovative IT Award - (not awarded)
  •  Communications & Electronics Award (not awarded)
  •  Best Product Design and Packaging - Ermila smith, Winter in Venice, range of beauty products
  •  International Award - Ivana Ziljak, Infraredesign, dual image printing technology for anti-counterfeiting and packaging
  •  GWIIN Organisation Capacity Building Award - Croatian Association of Inventors
  •  Chairman's Discretionary Special Recognition Award - Kane Kramer, the British Invention Show

Bola Olabisi, Founder of the Global Women Inventors and Innovators Network (GWIIN), which has organized the awards for 11 years now, received acknowledgment for her part in establishing the BFIIN awards and supporting the cause of innovative women starting new business ideas worldwide.

The European Women Inventors and Innovators Network (EUWIIN) awards are the next in the calendar. They take place in Helsinki, Finland, 7-9 October 2009. www.euwiin.eu
