Developing the Topster Trademark has been a key strategy in how Steve and Mike have packaged and marketed the product
Developing the Topster Trademark has been a key strategy in how Steve and Mike have packaged and marketed the product

True Teamwork Brings Success
Mike Farr interviewed by Cally Robson

Finding a trustworthy partner in business can be fraught with risks. But there are times when teamwork pays off. Mike Farr, one side of a double act with Steve Thomas, inventor of the Topster milk pourer, talks about the teamwork needed to launch and grow a successful product.

When Steve Thomas ran out of patience with pouring endless cups of milk for his young daughter, he knew there must be another solution for easy handling of plastic milk cartons.

Steve went on to invent the Topster, a clever plastic gadget that screws onto a carton and not only makes for quick pouring, but also helps unsteady hands pour accurately.

As soon as he was certain his invention worked, he looked to his old friend, Mike Farr, a lawyer, for a business partner.

In this interview at the British Invention Show 08, Mike talks about the Topster's development and launch, and how working with a positive team attitude has won them success.

Video Part 1 - notes

  • Although launched with children and the elderly in mind, feedback has been that the Topster is very much a family product.
  • The experience of working with Lakeland through their sales channels - web, mail order catalogue, and retail outlets. Feedback from the company is good and they're receptive to suggestions.
  • Importance of developing the Topster brand - people buy in retail when they see the cow packaging.
  • Strong patent and registered design. Together with strong brand, they've trademarked Topster. They're aiming for longevity of the product.
  • Looking at extending to other designs and products.

Video interview Part 2 5:25 mins (Click on arrow in video below to play)

Video Part 2 - notes

  • Two and half years in development - initially as a hobby. Steve had the idea and came up with the prototype himself, before Mike teamed up with him.
  • The benefits of working as a partnership.
  • Getting another distributor onboard.
  • Making their own sales via the Topster website. The challenge is how to market it.
  • Juggling the hobby with their day jobs.
  • Why they decided to prototype and manufacture in the UK with Cotsworld Plastics Ltd. Teamwork in development with Cotsworld has been especially important.
  • Importance of staying postive through the process of taking a product to market.
