Shell Springboard Has Cash For Ideas That Counter Climate Change
Cally Robson 7 July 2010
More than £1.6 million has been awarded to 43 UK businesses since Shell Springboard launched in 2005. Its sixth round has just opened, inviting applications from small businesses that have an innovative product or service that will help counter climate change.

To be eligible for one of the eight £40,000 awards, you must:

  • be based in the UK
  • have been established as a business for at least 3 months, as any business entity
  • be an SME by the European definition [ie "any entity engaged in an economic activity, irrespective of its legal form", so the self-employed, family firms, partnerships and associations regularly engaged in an economic activity may all be considered as enterprises]
    .

To win, a product or service must be:

  • innovative
  • commercially viable and
  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide).

In addition to the eight cash awards, there will be an overall UK winner and UK runner up. The UK winner gets 5 days consultancy and help from Shell's award-winning PR agency.

Previous winning business ideas have included an environmentally friendly alternative to funeral cremations, a website matching people moving goods with delivery companies already making similar journey, an eco-based alternative to concrete flooring, and a home energy use monitor.

Application closes 5 November 2010 and awards will be made in March 2011.
